THE POWER OF SOLITUDE

"Without great solitude no serious work is possible" - Pablo Picasso.

I found this island in Langkawi a great place, especially because there were very few people around. I could see long stretches of nature in its quiet form with very few humans. I don't get this ambience in a city.

It's in these solitary times that we hit the precious fathomless depths of our thinking and that's when the best of art gets created.

While most of us need a quiet place to focus, some great people have been able to find solitude and concentration while being in the middle of a cacophony. This is super human. The great cricketer Sunil Gavaskar used to mention that he could concentrate for long periods while in the middle of people talking and shouting.

FIXING OUR BOAT

The best way to fix our boat is to figure it out ourselves, in tune with the frequency and rhythm of our lives. While on the shore of the sea of life, the boats of many others will appear in the distance. We can wave to those in them and watch them as they wave back, and get a whimsical pleasure as we get from watching movies.

 

These could give us ideas to fix and a vicarious satiation of having fixed, but we cannot take their paths. We can even choose to close our eyes to them too, as the vicarious vibrations would be needed only when we yearn for another movie break. And yes, what's life without some of these vibrations of pleasure. But our boat is best when it's in our own hands.

SAND BUBBLER CRAB ART - PANTAI BEACH, LANGKAWI

We had finished visiting all the major spots in Langkawi and we only had this place remaining. My wife was negotiating with me to give up visiting this place for some shopping that she wanted to do. But I pressed for going here.

Unlike the black sand beach that was pretty lonely, we spotted a lot of people here.

We spotted sand-bubbler crabs, at the Pantai Beach, Langkawi, Malaysia. Sand-bubbler crabs of the genera Dotilla and Scopimera produce remarkable patterns and structures at tropical beaches.

These crabs live in burrows in the sand, where they remain during high tide. When the tide is out and gone, they emerge on to the surface of the sand, and scour the sand for food, forming it into inflated pellets, which cover the sand.

The speciality of these crabs is that breathe air with their legs-Scopimera and Dotilla.

BLACK SAND BEACH LANGKAWI - A TRANQUIL PLACE

While travelling in public transport, either in buses or suburban trains, I have gone through journeys where we had crowds like a swarm of bees and also journeys where there were just ten people in the whole bus or carriage. When the crowd was thin, we had air dancing through the vehicle and it was like a dream ride for me. I enjoyed those times much more than going around in my air conditioned car.

I had a similar experience, visiting the Marina Beach in Chennai on day of the Pongal festival. It was a claustrophobic experience and I just ran out of that place as quickly as I could. Quite contrary to that place, I found this tranquil beach, in Langkawi, Malaysia a superb place to hang around. Such a quiet place that every vibration of nature will be spotted by our ears.

There is an interesting local folklore that the black sand on the beach was the result of a large amount of firewood that was stacked along the shoreline and burnt by the people of the Land Kingdom when they were into a war with the Underwater Kingdom. This firewood when it was burning gave the impression of a huge army waiting on the shoreline and that kept the fighters of the Underwater Kingdom at bay.

All this fight according to the folklore,was because a mermaid princess from the Underwater Kingdom fell in love with a prince of the Land Kingdom and ran away. The war was supposed to be one-sided as the Underwater Kingdom had more troops than the Land Kingdom.
