BOOK REVIEW: STARTUP SECRETS FROM THE RAMAYANA - A VERY BEAUTIFULLY WOVEN BOOK

My Rating: 5 of 5 stars *****

Ramayana is one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient Indian history, the other being the Mahābhārata. Many individuals, especially Indians, would have had a chance to read one or both of these as part of school or college subjects or as a part of any other reading pursuit they would have got into.

The epic as composed by Maharishi Valmiki, is a narration of the life of Rama, a legendary prince of Ayodhya city in the kingdom of Kosala. It gives us a beautiful picture of his fourteen-year exile to the forest urged by his father King Dasharatha, on the request of Rama's stepmother Kaikeyi; his journeys across the forests in the Indian subcontinent with his wife Sita and his trusted brother Lakshmana, the kidnapping of Sita by Ravana – the king of Lanka, that resulted in a war and Rama's eventual triumphant return to Ayodhya to be crowned king amidst jubilation and celebration.

There are many similar epics that we get to read and we see the dynamics of good and evil in these and how good finally surmounts evil. Why do we read epics or history or why do we have these as subjects in school or college? This was a question that always kept inundating my mind especially when reading through it was a grind. I have read about so many kings, so many empires, so many rulers and administrators but how does their history matter to me. Yes I have to draw inspiration from their lives but how do I apply it into my life? Is this application a simple task? This is where author Prachi Garg beautifully weaves entrepreneurship and the epic together, seamlessly meshing history and a modern startup business and thus helps every entrepreneur with valuable takeaways to execute a business while in the midst of ruthless competition. What if Ram were a startup founder? This is the application in real life that we all need and I would also highly recommend every individual who starts his career to read this too as it touches upon several aspects of a business in general beautifully. The concept is wonderful and the author deserves a lot of praise for the same.

I was able to relate to a lot of happenings in my career as I read through this book, about my team and my superiors and above all the true heroes.

Prachi has very deftly handled the usage of vocabulary and also sentence construction. I enjoyed these areas tremendously. Also there were different concepts spread out across the chapters that I revisited as I liked them and thought of implementing them. "To be willing and daring enough to disrupt, to create chaos and destruction of the assumptions and prejudices formed out of our experiences and knowledge and to start all over again" is one of them. I am looking forward to try and implement these in my domain.

One other aspect I liked is about the nicely crafted summaries at the end of each chapter. We can make some actions out of these and check as to how much we are able to implement in our work or business.

Every professional and entrepreneur will benefit in a big way by reading this book and applying the concepts.
